The 411 on Us

If you are interested in the health field and are nervous about how to plan your future, don’t be- we have plenty of advice for you. This blog is for students entering or in college who don’t know what healthcare path to take. We can offer our four different perspectives to help you take the proper steps. We are interested in a variety of occupations including radiologist, dentist, dental hygienist, and physician’s assistant. Our four writers currently have one foot in the door by studying in healthcare fields at UNC Chapel Hill and have experience in a variety of science classes. Over the next 3 months our posts will explore natural sciences, research methods, and humanities, all of which play important roles in the healthcare field today.

I’m Nakul Patel, a first year biology major on the pre-med track at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I love science; at my high school I took every Advanced Placement science offered, and I’m still hungry for more. First semester of college I took CHEM 102 (General Chemistry 2) and BIOL 201 (Evolution and Ecology). And I’ve planned out my semesters so that in each one I am in at least one science class. I write to advise students interested in the Health Sciences about what classes to take, what to try and get out of your classes and in general how to navigate being a college pre-med student. Sarcasm and cynicism are my modus operandi and I pepper my writing with them.

My name is Tara Moore and I was born and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina. I am currently a sophomore at UNC Chapel Hill with an intended major of Dental Hygiene. I have taken a variety of science courses such as Biochemistry 107 and 108, Biology 101, and am currently enrolled in Biology 252 (Anatomy). I love the health field and Dental Hygiene has always been a desired job path. I understand the pressures of students in college making the right grades and would love to help anyone in need of assistance. I am a relaxed person who loves to go to the beach and be with my friends and family.

My name is Lauren Colberg and I’m from Cary, NC, just 20 minutes down the road from Chapel Hill. My whole life until I came to UNC-CH, I was a runner. Most people hate running, but I love it: the people I met, the feeling of finishing a race, and of course the pre-race pasta parties. Currently I fill my need to exercise and be outside by rowing on the UNC crew team. As for school, anything to do with how the body works fascinates me. That’s why once I graduate I want to go to PA school and one day work as a physician’s assistant in a hospital.

My name is Michael Schefke and I’m from Apex, North Carolina and I’m a freshmen majoring in Biology. I am on the pre-dental track at UNC Chapel Hill and I am currently in my second science class here. I think the healthcare field is a great path to pursue and I’m here to answer questions that anyone considering healthcare may have. Of course healthcare is not for everyone but I want to get out information and answer questions that any perspective healthcare student might have. As a pre-dental student I am knowledgeable about what certain steps must be taken in order to pursue a number of healthcare professions. Choosing a path for your future can be difficult and I want to give advice to anyone who has an interest in the medical field so they can make the right decisions regarding their future.
